Spice Up Talk Like A Pirate Day
September 19th is an excellent excuse to try the new crop of spiced rums and mix up a pirate-worthy cocktail or two.
Sunday is International Talk Like A Pirate Day and without doubt one of the most fun “holidays” around. It’s also an excellent excuse to try the new crop of spiced rums and perhaps mix up a pirate-worthy cocktail or two.
For ideas on throwing a Pirate Party, check out the official Talk Like A Pirate Day site, where you can download pirate songs, find recipes, or try the sophisticated but potent Lilikoi Rum Punch (below), and learn how to talk like a pirate.
So ahoy! And here are a few spiced rums to check out:
Spiced Rum:
Crusoe Organic Spiced Rum (California): Very sweet and luscious, with hits of cinnamon and allspice coupled with orange peel and molasses.
Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum (U.S. Virgin Islands): A hearty, deep amber rum, laced with a good hit of vanilla, warm clove, and a dry finish. Yum (I mean, aaarrrr)
Foursquare Spiced Rum (Barbados): While I’ve not been able to get my hands on this one to try first-hand, rum geeks say this rum is among the finest and worth seeking out.
The Kraken Black Spiced Rum (Trinidad and Tobago): Rich, inky liquid with molasses, coffee, and caramel aromas and flavors. Look for the Kraken, the octopus-like “sea monster” on the label.
Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum (Virgin Islands): Earthy and lightly sweet, with just a touch of baking spices. The cute hula-girl tattoo logo fits right in with any tiki party theme.
Cocktail:
Lilikoi Rum Punch
From Sips & Apps, by Kathy Casey
This big tropical punchbowl yields 10 to 12 servings—enough for a partyful of pirates.
1 (750 ml) bottle spiced rum
3 cups passionfruit puree
1 cup fresh lime juice
2 cups pineapple juice
Chilled soda water (optional)
Garnish: Lime wedges, edible flowers, or paper parasols.
In a large pitcher, combine the rum, passionfruit nectar, and juices. Stir. If not serving immediately, cover and refrigerate for up to four days, until needed.
To serve, fill old-fashioned or tall glasses with ice and pour in the rum punch. If desired, add a little splash of soda water to lighten the drink. Garnish as desired.
