Editor's Picks for May

Contributing Editor Michael Schachner selects superb Spanish reds for you to stock up on this month.

Published on Apr 16, 2012

As Spain gears up to defend its UEFA Euro soccer title, stock up on this quintet of Spanish wines rated 90 points or higher, tasted this month. Look for terroir galore from Priorat, richness and balance times two from Ribera del Duero, value from Rioja, and classic Sherry to wash down those peanuts and olives.

Gratallops Partida Bellvisos 2006 Priorat. Red fruit, schist and wild brush aromas are spot-on for Priorat. This wine is racy and pure, with red berry, vanilla, coconut and tobacco flavors. Finishes long and elegant. Drink now through 2016; 166 cases made. Domaine Select Wine Estates.
abv: 14%          Price: $130

Bodegas La Horra 2009 Corimbo I (Ribera del Duero). Dark as night, with charcoal, campfire, sweet berry and jammy aromas. Features fine acidity propelling black fruit, sweet oak, licorice and spice flavors. More smooth than rugged. Drink through 2019. Kobrand.
abv: 14.5%         Price: $63

Hidalgo NV Marqués de Rodil Palo Cortado (Sherry). Light in color, with pecan pie aromas and crispness. This is a refined palo cortado that’s tight in the mouth, with narrowing acidity and properly oily flavors of citrus, almond and rancio. Long on the finish. Winebow.
abv: 18%         Price: $40

Martín Berdugo 2008 Crianza (Ribera del Duero). After rubber and bacon on the nose, berry fruit and medicinal aromas settle in. It feels full and structured, with black cherry and wild berry flavors, then finishes warm, chocolaty and lightly roasted. Editors’ Choice. Puerto Viejo Wines.
abv: 14%         Price: $20

Señorío de Uñuela 2006 Reserva (Rioja). This is excellent modern Rioja at a fair price. It smells like crusty minerals and toasty oak, along with black fruit, and it feels plush, with jammy blackberry, baked fig and coffee flavors. Toasty, meaty and dark on the finish. Drink now through 2014. Editors’ Choice. Devo Enterprises Corporation.
abv: 14.5%       Price: $21
