The Greek Wine Weeks

The rise of Greek quality wines is unstoppable. The Greek wine sector has recently developed into a serious competitor to the established wine industry, inside as well as outside Europe. Through this metamorphosis the Greek winemakers have liberated themselves from the persistent image of producing only simple and cheap wines. Nevertheless these wines (retsina!) are continuously popular amongst many Greek food lovers. However, it is the new generation winemakers that support the rebirth of forgotten, endemic grape varieties. To experience these quality-changes, wine enthusiasts worldwide are invited to take part in The Greek Wine Weeks, to be held in spring 2012.

Where and when?
On Kythira, one of the most natural islands in Greece, situated just south of the Peloponnese peninsula. Positioned in the heart of the island, traditional guest-house Xenónas Fos kè Chóros is the comfortable home- base of the Greek Wine Weeks. Tailor-made hospitality and far away from any mass-tourism. The Wine Weeks are from the 17th until the 23rd and from the 24th until 30th of march 2012. At this time of year nature in southern-Greece is abundant with wild flowers and blossoming Mediterranean herbs.

Who's your mentor? Cornelius Wesseling, enthusiastic traveller of Greece for many years, Greek wine specialist, registered wine & food teacher, Slow Food member and owner of “Savoir Vivre” in the Netherlands. Cornelius has more than 20 years experience in international cuisine. Since 1987 he has a degree a degree as “Registered Vinoloog” and “Liquorist” from the Dutch Wine Academy. He lived and worked for two years on the island of Kythira. During this 6-day Symposium he will take you to unforgettable sensory highlights. Currently he is working on a comprehensive Greek Wine Guide.

Programme outline
Al least two “wine & food pairing” tastings a day, grouped around the six major wine-regions: Northern Greece, Epirus, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Crete and Aegean Islands. The tastings will be presented in quality restaurants scattered around the Island as well as tastings in the guest-house itself. There will also be visits to and tastings at a local island winery and a Tsipoura (Grappa) distillery. In this way you will obtain a perfect impression of the island itself as well as the high standards of contemporary Greek wine-making. Part of each day is not programmed, so that you can spend the time as you wish. The exact programme will be released in January 2011.
