Wonderful things are promised in the early nosings as baked aromas of cherry pastry, dark bread (pumpernickel?), and toffee thrill the olfactory sense; aeration doesn't advance the bouquet to the next level. Palate entry displays soft but plump flavors of toast with honey and oaky vanilla, then at midpalate there's a rush of dark caramel/toffee/honey that nearly overwhelms the taste buds. Ends sap-like. P.P.

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
