Bronze/topaz color. Initial sniffings find lightly toasted, lightly salted scents of sea breeze, malt and oak; six more minutes in the glass release additional fragrances, including honey, fried bread, roasted almonds and oil. Palate entry is warming, semisweet and almost fruity; by midpalate, the taste goes slightly briny, intensely oaky and flat-out sweet. Finish is hot-wired, lively to the point of being prickly on the tongue and luscious. P.P.

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
