5 World Cup Sips
For soccer fans the world over, today is momentous: June 12 marks the official kick off of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and for the next month, all eyes are on the 32 teams from across the globe competing for the top prize. To get in the spirit of the game, we’ve rounded up the five best sips being served at the event or honor the host country’s vibrant culture.
This year’s World Cup kicks off on International Cachaça Day (which commemorates when Portugal banned the spirit in the 1700s), so it’s only natural that Brazil’s leading cachaça producer Pitú would pull out all the stops and design a limited-edition bottle of the spirit dedicated to the soccer event. The flashy flask, which is available in limited markets, features cultural elements, like soccer balls, music and bongo players, in bright greens and yellow—and it’s ideal for mixing up the country’s national drink, caipirinha.
Budweiser, the World Cup’s official beer sponsor, introduced a limited-edition gold bottle for the event, but that’s nothing compared to what’s going on in the Pestana Rio Atlântica hotel on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach. Dubbed “The Bud Hotel,” the space will serve as a hub for all-things World Cup, including viewings of matches, social media events and concerts with a seemingly endless supply of the gold bottles for fans.
You may think beer is the natural pairing for sports, but don’t count wine out. In fact, the FIFA organization handpicked Brazilian winery Lidio Carraro as its official wine supplier for the games. Based in Southern Brazil’s Vale dos Vinhedos and Encruzilhada do Sul, the winery created a new range of three wines—a white, a red and a rosé—named Faces, which will be exclusively served at FIFA-organized events throughout the World Cup.
Legendary British team Manchester United Football Club partnered up with Chilean wine producer Concha y Toro to make a one-time-only commemorative bottle for the FIFA World Cup. The Casillero del Diablo Manchester United Legendary Collection—made with Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Carmenère—is signed by players Nemanja Vidić and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, and the team’s newly appointed coach, Ryan Giggs. It also features the official Manchester United Red Devils logo on the bottle.
Absolut Vodka tapped into Brazil’s lively spirit with its latest limited-edition offering, Absolut Taste of Karnival. Commemorating the country’s iconic Carnival, the passion fruit- and orange blossom-flavored vodka bottle is adorned with a label created by Brazilian artist Rafael Grampá that features a parade of costumed revelers circling the bottle.
