In the global epicenter of traditional cafés and bars du vins (wine bars), the clever cocktail lounge is on the upswing. Much like we have seen in a number of American cities, Paris is giving rise to a new fleet of sleek, creative cocktail clubs at which the bartenders are encouraged to mix and match away, all with the intent of creating the next hot libation. Among the leaders in the Parisian cocktail revolution is Olivier Bon, who founded Experimental Cocktail Club (37, rue Saint-Sauveur) before opening Curio Parlor (16, rue des Bernardins), and most recently, Prescription Cocktail Club (23, rue Mazarine). All attract a hip, international crowd eager to expand their imbibing beyond the tried and true.
Here is the recipe for Experimental Cocktail Club’s whistle-whetting Experience 1:
- 5cl (roughly 1.75 oz.) Plymouth or Hendrick’s gin, or Ketel One vodka
- 2cl (roughly 0.75 oz.) fresh lemon juice
- 2cl (roughly 0.75 oz.) elderflower cordial, preferably Belvoir
- 1 or 2 leaves fresh basil, macerated or finely shredded
- 1 stick lemongrass (for garnish)
Mix ingredients in an iced Boston shaker, shake well, and strain into a martini glass with lemongrass for stirring.
