Prosecco enthusiasts got a chance to taste and learn more about Italy’s most festive sparkling wine during the two-day Vino in Villa event held last weekend at the breathtakingly beautiful Castello di San Salvatore in the northeastern Veneto region.
Organized by the Consorzio per la Tutela del Vino Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, this year’s event saw some 250 wines poured by 74 producers and was attended by 13,000 foreign and Italian Prosecco lovers. Because Prosecco enjoys a particularly strong following in the United States (imports were up an impressive 11.5 percent in 2005 over the year before totaling $1 billion) the theme this year at Vino in Villa was “Prosecco and the USA.”
“Vino in Villa is an opportunity for us to learn about the US market and to showcase this unique wine that can only be made in this area of Italy,” said Consorzio Director Giancarlo Vettorello.
The fun, fresh and informal sparkling wine was paired with California cuisine prepared by San Francisco chef Suzette Gresham of Acquerello and Wine Enthusiast Magazine organized a tasting of Californian wines to match traditional Veneto food as interpreted by cook Federico Vescovo. Italian wine importer Leonardo Lo Cascio headed a seminar on Prosecco in the US.
With is towering steeple and crenulated walls, the San Salvatore Castle in Susegana is one of the most beautiful in Northern Italy. Almost completely destroyed during WWI, the restored monument is now owned by the same noble family that produces Collalto Prosecco.
