Château Fourcas-Hosten Sold

The marriage of luxury and wine continues with the sale of the Médoc estate Château Fourcas-Hosten to Laurent and Renaud Mommeja, members of the Hermès luxury goods family.

“It’s a wonderful dream, an adventure,” Renaud Mommeja, 40, told Wine Enthusiast in an exclusive interview. “I have been a wine collector for many years, and my brother and I wanted to do something personal. So I have been able to combine that with my love of wine.”

The brothers bought the 118-acre cru bourgeois supérieur property in the Listrac-Médoc appellation as private owners; it is not part of the Hermès business empire. The price was not disclosed.

The estate was owned by Peter Sichel and Patrice Pagès since 1971. Sichel, a New York resident since 1941, is a fourth-generation wine merchant and producer. While CEO of his family firm in Germany, he built up the Blue Nun brand. He is widely known for his war work in the Office of Strategic Services and is a trustee of the World Monuments Fund.

Patrice Pagès also directs his family’s property in Listrac, Château Fourcas-Dupré. He remains at Fourcas-Hosten as technical director.

Renaud Mommeja, who runs a marketing business in Toulouse, as well as being on the Hermès board, said that the choice of Fourcas-Hosten, established in 1810, was “because we wanted to have a property in an area with a great tradition, and my family has always had an interest in the wines of the Médoc.”

Château Fourcas-Hosten produces 22,000 bottles of the first wine, and 5,000 bottles of a second wine, Les Cèdres de Fourcas. The vineyard consists of about 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Renaud Mommeja was at the chateau for the 2006 harvest just days after the sale. “We have some excellent Merlot, but rain has affected the Cabernet, and so we have to be selective. But in my opinion, we could make a better wine than 2004.”
