If Dad Prefers Whiskey to Wine

For the wine-loving dads, there’s no dearth of gift options this Father’s Day—click here for top picks from Wine Enthusiast. But what if the old man prefers whiskey to wine, takes Cognac, rather than Port, as his postprandial drink of choice? A national survey, conducted in February by the Classic Malts Selection, found that, overall, the dads interviewed wanted high-end spirits more than any other gift for Father’s Day (granted a survey distributed by a high end liquor distributor is a bit biased). And, out of the sons surveyed, nearly 40% said they planed to go the high-end route, spending—despite today’s economic climate—more than $50 on a gift for dear old dad. Wine Enthusiast, thus, rounded up some options, all within that price range, for the spirit-loving gentlemen out there.

Whiskey and Whisky
The Classic Malts Selection from Diageo, a fine portfolio of scotch, represents all the major whisky flavor profiles. Several high-end whiskies in the collection include Talisker 10-year-old ($49.99), the Singleton of Glendullan ($35.99) and Glenkinchie 12-year-old ($49.99). They make a great gift for those dads looking to increase their whiskey knowledge and try new flavor profiles.

Dewar’s has a specially designed, limited edition Dewar’s Discovery Gift Set ($100) that includes the newest member of the Dewar’s family, Dewar’s 18. Also in the set are Dewar’s 12 and the ultra premium Dewar’s Signature. The 200-ml bottles are encased in an elegant leather pack.

Glenmorangie’s Father’s Day Gift Pack ($45) includes one 750-ml bottle of Glenmorangie Original along with two bespoke tumbler glasses. There’s also the Glenmorangie Collection Gift Pack ($45), which contains four bottles (each 100 mL) of each expression in the Glenmorangie extra-mature, single malt range: the Original (10 Years Old), Lasanta (Sherry Cask Extra Mature), Quinta Ruban (Port Cask Extra Mature) and Nectar d’Or (Sauternes Cask Extra Mature).

From Four Roses, comes a Single Barrel Limited Edition 2009 Release ($60-100), just in time for Father’s Day. The 11-year-old Bourbon (Four Roses was once the best-seller in the U.S. and then not available here for decades) is uncut and not chill filtered. Only 1,800 bottles, from super select barrels at the distillery, will be distributed in the U.S.

Other Spirits
Gran Patrón Platinum ($199) is such a super-premium Tequila that it’s always (and not just for Father’s Day) sold wrapped in a black velvet bag inside a handmade, violin-quality, maple wood box. And the bottle is lead-free crystal.

The Depaz Dual Pack ($39.99) contains a 750-ml bottle of Depaz Blue Cane Rhum Agricole and a 700-ml bottle of Depaz Cane Syrup, which together combine to make some delicious cocktails. The signature Depaz Midnight Mojito recipe is printed on the side of the box. All you need to do is add fresh mint and lime juice.

Knob Creek, the nation’s #1-selling super-premium Bourbon, is offering a limited edition customized label, printed exclusively for dad. The labels are complimentary and can be created online.
