Cliff Lede, a Napa Valley winery that has earned high scores for its Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignons, has acquired another top winery, Breggo, which routinely receives scores in the 90s with single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from Anderson Valley.
While several California wineries have been purchased during this recession, it’s generally been by large wineries or wine corporations. More unusual is for a small boutique winery like Cliff Lede, which produces about 17,000 cases of wine each year, to buy another small boutique. Breggo’s annual production averages 5,000 cases.
Cliff Lede, the owner of his eponymous winery, explained that he’s been seeking to diversify beyond Napa Valley Cabernet “for years. I have no desire to fly to Chile, so to diversify meant something in this area, and Pinot Noir was a logical choice.”
Breggo’s co-owner and founder, Douglas Stewart, “is good friends with someone who works at Cliff Lede, and we knew Doug’s ambition and drive,” Lede said. Stewart will remain as an equity partner in Breggo and serve as general manager and winemaker.
