Bastille Day Cocktails

If you didn’t get your fill of July 4th celebrations, consider France’s version of Independence Day another opportunity to imbibe. July 14 commemorates the storming of Bastille, a major revolt that kicked off the French Revolution in 1789.

This Bastille Day offers a chance to enjoy simple, sophisticated cocktails using French liqueurs.

One such spirit to try is Lillet, an aperitif from Bordeaux. This summer, it launched a collectable, limited-edition bottle (pictured). It features a tres chic Art Deco-inspired label designed by Brooklyn-based illustrator Autumn Whitehurst.

Pernod, the anise-flavored liqueur, is another French favorite, known for giving an herbaceous boost to warm-weather tipples. Here are a few recipes to get your party started–no beret required.

Pernod French Kiss

1 part Pernod
4 parts orange juice
1 dash grenadine
Mix Pernod and orange juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a martini glass. Add grenadine and allow it to settle at the bottom.

La Rousse

2 ounce Lillet Blanc
1 ounce Lillet Rouge
¾ ounce simple syrup
1 dash orange bitters
2 ounce club soda
1 ounce tonic water
Add ingredients, shake and double strain up into a chilled glass. Garnish with orange twist or peel.

The Muse

1 ½  ounce Lillet Blanc
¾ ounce Hendrick’s Gin
¾ ounce Yellow Chartreuse
½ ounce lime juice
½ ounce simple syrup
3 cucumber slices
3 mint leaves
Muddle cucumber, mint and simple syrup in the bottom of a mixing glass. Add other ingredients to shaker, build cocktail over ice in Collins glass and stir to combine. Garnish with a cucumber slice and mint leaf.
