The Mondavi Family Masters Technology

The Mondavi family together with The Morton's Steakhouse host an interactive charity wine auction.

Last week, on October 7, a simulcast wine dinner hosted by Morton’s The Steakhouse and members of the Mondavi family was more than an event about wine and food—it was about charity and, well, the Internet.
Three generations of the Mondavi family were united at the Charles Krug Winery Carriage House in Napa Valley, where they led a wine auction that was broadcast simultaneously in 54 Morton’s The Steakhouse dining rooms via state-of-the-art satellite technology. The objective: to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation—the non-profit dedicated to granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses—and celebrate the wine family.
Attendees paid $175 for food and wine and a seat in the dining room equipped with 1080i high-definition programming and a nine-foot screen, where they watched Mondavi family members auction off a three-pack of premium wines from Peter Mondavi, Sr.’s Charles Krug Winery, Tim Mondavi’s Continuum Estate and Michael Mondavi’s Folio Fine Wine Partners. The seats at the main event in Napa Valley cost $500. The event was also live on Facebook and Twitter.
At the centerpiece of the auction was a 27-liter bottle of a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blend, “Siamo Insieme,” or “we are together” in Italian, produced by the second and third generations of Mondavis. A second, identical bottle resides at the Chicago wine auction house, Hart Davis Hart, and is being auctioned until October 30 by visiting, Last week’s dinner raised more than $105,000.
“On behalf of the Guild of Sommeliers, we thank the Mondavi family for all their years of service, passion and glorious wines, and for making our world of sommeliers better,” said Fred Dame, M.S. and president of the Guild of Sommeliers Education Foundation, when he presented awards to the family.
Peter Mondavi, Jr. said the event was marked by “two critical aspects: one was bringing the family together again in such a grand way. And the other is a continuation of our support for Make-A-Wish,” he said. “We’ve been supporting them for eight years, and tonight we’ve blown the top off the roof, with regards to how many more wishes we can generate.”
