Wine By Sign

Wondering what to drink this month? Why not let your astrological sign be your guide? Check your wine horoscope this month and see where your sign connects with one of our top-scoring picks from Wine Enthusiast’s own buying guide. Is it a match made in heaven? You tell us.

March 21–April 19
Adventurous, hardy and outgoing, the sign of the ram tends toward trying new things—and even when life gives her lemons, Aries bounces back with a fresh take on lemonade (usually spiked). As a fire sign, Aries is naturally attracted to exploring spicy, ruby red vinos like Syrah from New World regions. Try the 91-point 2007 Sparkman Ruckus from Columbia Valley ($38).

April 20–May 20
As an earth sign, the bull of the zodiac exudes a grounded sensibility and craves comfort. The strong-willed Taurus tends to have one or two tried-and-true wines that he absolutely adores (and won’t be too comfortable switching things up!). A California Pinot Noir like the Of the Place 2008 from the Russian River Valley ($30), which we scored at 93 points, is sure to appeal.

May 21–June 20
Gemini is the sign of the twins—meaning that two often contradictory selves are contained in one. Sometimes social, sometimes reclusive, Gemini is always opinionated, on the move and gravitating toward something different. For the sweet twin within, try an Austrian Riesling like the 92-point Rainer Wess 2009 Trockenbeerenauslese from the Wachau ($42), and for the saucier half, a spicy Zinfandel like the 2007 Unti from Dry Creek Valley ($26) which scored 93 points.

June 21–July 22
Sometimes hard on the outside (but always a softie underneath) those born under the sign of the crab are highly nurturing. A water sign, Cancers are compassionate and oriented toward maintaining close bonds with family and friends. Fittingly, easy-to-pair wines like the Henri Bourgeois 2008 Le MD de Bourgeois from Sancerre ($36), raking in 94 points, is sure to be a crowd pleaser at any gathering thrown by a Cancer.

July 23–August 22
The lion of the zodiac is usually the star of the show—wherever she or he goes! Known to have a penchant for luxurious living, Leo always treasures the finer things in life—including the very best wines on offer (price is never an issue for the King of the Jungle). Leos will splurge on a nice Champagne complete with a shiny gold label, like the 94-point Krug NV Grande Cuvée Brut ($180).

August 23–September 22
Down-to-earth, organized and dedicated, the virgin is a natural giver, ideal friend and hard worker. But after a long day on the job, this Earth sign likes to unwind at home (likely by typing a to-do list) with a glass of wine in hand. Rich, earthy Cabernet blends, like the well balanced, 90-point 2006 Altaïr Sideral from Rapel Valley in Chile ($31) is a great fit for the Virgo.

September 23–October 22
Ruled by Venus, this air sign seeks balance in all things (so much so that decision making is often difficult for those born under this sign!). Natural-born leaders, Libras are often flirts, but do well in love and business with close, one-on-one partnerships. Ultimately, the simpler things appeal to this stable sign—including well balanced, refreshing Spanish Albariños, like the 2007 As Laxas from Rías Baixas ($17), scoring 90 points.

October 23–November 21
Passion, desire and danger all feature prominently in the lives of most Scorpios (after all, the sign is modeled after the scorpion!). Intense, sometimes brooding and blessed with a lust for life, Scorpios are attracted to the big, bold flavors often found in South African Shiraz like the 2006 Muratie Ronnie Melck A Tribute ($60).

November 22–December 21
Outgoing, exuberant and generous (sometimes to a fault), Sagittarius is an excellent party planner, and is often the go-to person for advice (or a shoulder to cry on). The Sagittarian has a naughty sense of humor, and is amused by novel things and ideas. Rosé wines, like the 91-point Château les Valentines 2009 Rosé from the Cotes de Provence ($25) is a great pick for this fire sign.

December 22–January 19
Patience and perseverance mark the sign of the goat—Capricorns are also known to “climb mountains” and are attracted to scaling new heights romantically, socially and even physically. This Earth sign is frequently stubborn, and has a few tried-and-true favorites, but with a gentle nudge will often try new things. Juicy yet complex, French Malbecs like the Château du Cèdre 2006 from Cahors (scoring well at 95 points) should delight any Capricorn.

January 20–February 18
Natural-born leaders, original thinkers and true innovators, Aquarians often usher in new ideas and frequently set trends. This air sign is also down to earth, enjoying quiet nights at home as well as parties on the town. Innovative producers like Dr. Konstantin Frank (who revolutionized winemaking in New York’s Finger Lakes by promoting Old World vitis vinifera grape varieties) will please this intrinsically curious sign. Try their 2008 Semi Dry Riesling ($15) which scored 88 points.

February 19–March 20
Ruled by Neptune, the fish of the zodiac is the perfect embodiment of water, always moving with the tides. Dreamy, poetic and free-thinking, this highly sensitive sign seeks the fantastical in all things, like the supernatural sweetness of a Riesling Eiswein like the 2007 Dr. Looson from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer ($23), scoring superbly at 94 points.
