Mixology for Their Majesties

Not since Diana walked down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral in a puffy sleeved dress with yards of taffeta has there been this much interest in a royal wedding. While the world awaits the sure-to-be grand and glamorous nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, mixologists around the world are feverishly grabbing bottles and shakers to mix up some concoctions inspired by the royal couple. Here are WE’s favorite few:


Beefeater Royal Punch

Warner took classic and modern ingredients to give this royal punch a contemporary twist. Each ingredient is significant, he says. “Pomegranate represents life, regeneration and marriage in Greek mythology, whilst American lemonade adds balance and length to the punch. Angostura bitters, one of the original and most famous punch ingredients, completes the recipe.” Dubonnet and gin were also enjoyed by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth.

2 parts Beefeater London Dry Gin
1 part Dubonnet
1 part pomegranate juice
2 parts fresh lemonade
Angostura bitters to taste
Lemon and lime wheels, mint sprigs and pomegranate seeds, for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Garnish with wheels of lemon and lime, mint sprigs and pomegranate seeds.

Chill the punch with lots of regular ice cubes, or make your own fruit ice cube by freezing oranges and lemon slices with water in a plastic container like an ice cream tub or round Jell-o mold. Click here to learn how to make decorative ice cubes.

Kate’s Ring

This cocktail is tinted the same vibrant hue as Middleton’s striking sapphire engagement ring—the same piece of jewelry that Prince Charles offered when he proposed to Princess Diana with. "The sapphire hue of the Blue Curacao, Bombay Sapphire Gin, which hails from England, and sugared rim have individual symbolism, but when combined, they bear tribute to the world’s gaze on that day: the princess bride and her engagement ring,” says Grant.

3½ ounces Bombay Sapphire Gin
1½ ounces St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1 ounce Blue Curaao
1 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 ounce Mionetto Prosecco (or another sparkling wine)
Sugar, to rim glass

Wet the outside of a chilled large cocktail glass with a lemon or lime wedge and roll in sugar to coat.

Add first four ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into the prepared cocktail glass. Slowly pour Prosecco on top to float.

The Prince & the Pisco

King’s Ginger was originally created in the early 1900s for King Edward VII, who liked to take leisurely drives in his car. His royal physician was worried about the king’s exposure and prescribed this bitey liqueur to warm him up. Here, “the Velvet Falernum pulls out sweetness and flavor from the King’s Ginger, while the Peychaud’s and lemon dry and brighten,” says Ventura.

1½ ounce Campo de Encanto Pisco
1 ounce King’s Ginger
¼ ounce John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum
3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
¾ ounce lemon
Lemon twist, for garnish

Add all ingredients except lemon twist to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

The Great Kate

While researching to create a cocktail inspired by the upcoming wedding, Mangual learned that Middleton’s preferred spirit is gin—and Royal Combier is an obvious choice for an ingredient. Muddled strawberries give the drink a red tint: the color of love and royalty, and also part of the Union Jack.

2 ounces Brokers London Dry Gin
½ ounce Royal Combier
1 ounce lemon juice
3 strawberries
1 ounce Champagne
Strawberry slices, for garnish

Muddle strawberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add gin, Royal Combier and lemon. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with strawberry slices around the rim.

The William

This Manhattan riff is masculine, potent and complex—and fit for the future King of England. The drink was derived from a classic cocktail from William Boothby’s 1891 cocktail book. If you prefer, you can serve it on the rocks.

1½ ounce Barceló Imperial Rum
¾ ounce sweet vermouth
2 dashes The Bitter Truth Aromatic Bitters
¾ ounce brut Champagne
Maraschino cherry, for garnish

Add first three ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and top with Champagne. Garnish with a Marashino cherry.
