The French wine industry is considering a radical shift in global marketing strategy, focusing on grape type rather than the region of production.

Direct-to-consumer wine shipments surged 11.5% for the 12 months ending April 2011, far outpacing the overall wine market, according to a new report from ShipCompliant/Wines & Vines.

Private liquor store transactions for beer, wine and spirits are up 6% for the 12 months that ended May 2011 and bar sales are up nearly 4%, according to Sageworks Inc., a financial analysis firm.
