News and notes from the world of wine.

A growing number of anonymous bidders are purchasing high-end wines such as Lafite and Latour in Internet-only sales offered by the likes of Acker Merrall & Condit and Spectrum Wine Auctions, the Wall Street Journal reports. Compared with traditional sales events, Internet auctions typically offer smaller units of sale (a single bottle, for example, rather than a case) and less expensive wines. The online bidders are likely individual consumers and not trade buyers, experts believe.

Beer, the long-preferred beverage at baseball games, is facing some competition. North American stadiums are now offering wine as a beverage option.

Pernod Ricard USA acquired exclusive distribution rights to Tequila Avion™, as well as a minority interest in the growing brand.

On August 13, 2011, Meoko Vodka will hold a benefit event at New York City’s Harvard Club for Limbs for Life—an organization that provides prosthetic care to amputees in need who cannot otherwise afford it. All of the proceeds raised from this Prohibition-themed gala will be donated to the charity. For more information, click here.
