On Friday, September 23, like a party scene out of CSI: Miami, hundreds of South Floridians dressed to kill filled the Art Deco interior of the Moore Building venue in the city’s design district. Decked out for an evening of revelry, the young and fashionable crowd sipped their choices of more than 300 wines and grazed on small plates from some two dozen of Miami’s best restaurants.
Despite Miami’s legendary heat and humidity, the venue’s great climate control allowed Cabernet lovers to enjoy Merryvale’s 2007 Profile, a Wine Enthusiast Cellar Selection, the 95-point 2007 Robert Mondavi Reserve and Alexander Valley Vineyards’s 2006 Cyrus. But there was plenty to like in white and sparkling wines as well: Cloudy Bay’s signature Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, Champagne Roederer’s Brut Premier and an array of refreshing vinho verde from Portugal.
For attendees who wanted a break from the parade of outstanding wines, Sam Adams poured a range of beers, including the rich yet elegant Barrel Room Collection New World Tripel, while spirits devotees could sample several versions of Michter’s Bourbon, Crop Organic Vodka and Farmer’s Gin. Saratoga Spring Water made an ideal palate refresher.
The participating restaurants’ dishes matched the elevated level of the evening’s beverages, ranging from Blue Door Fish’s citrusy Grouper Seviche with Peruvian Yellow Peppers to the profoundly satisfying Flank Steak with Truffled Mashed Potatoes and Chimichurri Sauce from Texas de Brazil. Egg Whites Catering even presented its Wasabi-Infued Tuna Tartare and Avocado in individual egg shells.
Cupcakes ruled the dessert selections, with Enchanting Creations’ bite-sized versions in flavors from Banana Caramel Cream and Key Lime Pie to Double Chocolate and Tiramisu among the crowd favorites.
Throughout the night, tunes from the Augie Hass Quartet filled the soaring space, adding an extra festive glow to the proceedings.
