On Monday, October 17, Chairman Bill Deutsch and CEO Peter Deutsch of W.J. Deutsch & Sons, a leading importer of fine wine, were presented with the prestigious Dr. Louis Berger Memorial Award at the Wine & Spirits Industry’s 34th gala. The event also served to raise $590,000 for the American Cancer Society. Over the past 10 years, the annual gala has raised more than $4.5 million to aid in cancer research, education and services for cancer patients and their families.

Fourteen of the 49 candidates passed the rigorous Advanced Sommelier Exam, which took place October 10–14, in Seattle, Washington. The Advanced Sommelier Exam is the third of four increasingly challenging levels in the pursuit of the prestigious master sommelier title, which only 186 individuals have achieved worldwide. Congratulations to Justin Amick, Cynthia Betancourt, Rina Bussell, Bobby Conroy, Ryan C. Gaudin, Erica Landon, Chris Lara, Jack Mason, Nathan Prater, Jonathan Ross, Erik Segelbaum, Cole Sisson, Daniele Tavernaro and Colin Thoreen.

The clothing company Banana Republic and California winery Clos du Bois are teaming up this holiday season to release limited edition wine bottles with labels designed by Simon Kneen, Banana Republic’s creative director. The hand-sketched labels will be featured on Clos du Bois’ two most popular wines: its North Coast Chardonnay and North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cornell University researchers Dr. Timothy Martinson and Dr. Bruce Reisch, from the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, were awarded grants totaling $4.5 million for two grape research projects––Reisch’s project aims to improve wine, table and raisin grapes as well as rootstocks, while Martinson’s project is designed to determine how to successfully commercialize new northern varieties.

Tracey Woodward has been appointed marketing director for the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Alliance, a nonprofit trade association that represents 500 wineries, growers and associates in Sonoma Valley. Prior to joining the SVVGA, Woodward spent more than 10 years in key marketing and business strategy roles at Beam Wine Estates, Brown-Forman, Diageo and Moët & Chandon.
