Oregon Govenor John Kitzhaber has signed a declaration designating May 2012 as Oregon Wine Month, an effort to recognize the rapid growth and reputation of Oregon’s wine industry.
According to a recent news release from the California Table Grape Commission, antioxidants in grapes may prevent the onset of age-related macular degeneration, a condition that is known to be the primary cause of blindness in the elderly. Researcher and Fordham University professor Silvia Finnemann, Ph.D., studied how a diet rich in antioxidants protected the retinas of mice prone to developing retinal damage in old age. The original study was published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine (2011).
Sonoma State University announced that it will launch a wine-focused MBA program that allows people with a minimum of five years in the wine industry to earn accreditation. The 17-month Executive Master of Business Administration program will commence in mid-April.
University of Connecticut’s recent investigation of Dr. Dipak Das, the head of a research lab in UConn’s Cardiovascular Research Center, confirms that Das skewed data in 26 scientific publications, with some of the studies involving resveratrol––a compound found in red wine said to have remedial properties. According to the report, Das digitally altered images to deliberately falsify the data. It’s still uncertain how the manipulations will affect the results of the 26 processed papers.
California’s Concannon Vineyards has teamed up with Ireland’s Cooley Distillery to craft a new brand, Concannon Irish Whiskey, which is slated to hit the U.S. market later this month. The whiskey––a blend of malted barley and corn––will be distilled and blended at Ireland’s Cooley Distillery and aged in Bourbon barrels for a minimum of four years before being finished in Concannon Petite Sirah barrels.
