Accolade Wines Acquires California Labels

Australian based Accolade Wines, owners of Australian wine brands such as Hardys, Banrock Station and Yarra Burn, acquired the California brands Geyser Peak Winery, Atlas Peak and XYZin from Healdsburg, California based Ascentia Wine Estates. Currently, Accolade Wines is the world’s fifth-largest wine company.

On Wednesday, May 30, the Italian wine pioneer Aldo Conterno passed away at the age of 81 in Monforte d’Alba, Italy. Conterno was known for his interest in New World winemaking practices and his role in the rebirth of Barolo. For the full story, click here.

Campari America has been appointed sole U.S. importer and distributor for Morrison Bowmore Distillers’ McClelland’s Single Malt Scotch. According to Impact Databank, McClelland’s is the sixth largest single-malt Scotch brand in the U.S.

The premium drinks business Diageo has acquired the cachaça brand Ypióca from Brazil’s Ypióca Agroindustrial Limitada for approximately $470 million. According to Diageo, Ypióca accounts for 8% of the total cachaça category and more than 60% of the premium cachaça category in Brazil.

Château Lafite Rothschild will use Prooftag antifraud seals on all bottles from the 2009 vintage. Located on the capsule, Prooftag is a 13 number code for authenticating individual bottles. Other châteaux that currently use the system include Ausone, Margaux and Latour. Outside of the wine world, Prooftag is purportedly being utilized by some government agencies for the delivery of classified documents.
