The Hourglass Wine Company has appointed Anthony Biagi as the winemaker for its two vineyards: Hourglass Vineyard in St. Helena and the Blueline Vineyard in Calistoga, Napa. Prior to his appointment, Biagi worked as winemaker at Napa Valley wineries Plumpjack and CADE since 2003. He holds a degree in fermentation science from the University of California, Davis.
Count Ugo Contini Bonacossi, 90, owner of Tenuta di Capezzana in Carmignano, Italy, passed away last week, on Thursday, May 24. Bonacossi was considered an Italian wine pioneer for leading the development and promotion for the wines of Carmignano.
St. Helena, California-based C. Mondavi & Sons, has launched The Divining Rod, the company’s first new brand in more than 60 years. The new line, which is comprised of a 2010 Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay and a 2010 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, will be available for $17/750 ml. Other brands featured in C. Mondavi’s portfolio are Charles Krug and CK Mondavi.
Edward J. King Jr., 90, co-founder of King Estate Winery in Eugene, Oregon, passed away last week, on Sunday, June 3. King Jr. founded the winery with his son Edward King III in 1991. Today, the estate is known for its Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
Jon Ruel of Napa Valley’s Trefethen Family Vineyards has been appointed president of the board of Napa Valley Grapegrowers for 2012¬–13. Other appointments for the year include Steve Moulds of Moulds Family Vineyards as vice president and Garret Buckland of Premiere Viticultural Services as treasurer.
