Flavored Rums To Try Now

With warm weather in full gear, a new crop of slightly unusual flavored rums—some sweetened, some spiced, in all hues from pink blush to inky black—are hitting store shelves. And they all have one thing in common: they provide an extra burst of flavor in standard summer sips.

Check out these four delicious selections, with drink suggestions.

Captain Morgan Black Cask 100 Proof Spiced Rum (The Caribbean; Captain Morgan Rum Co., St. Croix, U.S.V.I.; Diageo Americas, Norwalk, CT). This new spiced blackstrap rum is dark and dangerous, with a cola-like flavor that explodes into spicy fireworks of cinnamon and clove. Rum aged in double charred blackened barrels results in an oaky, slightly bitter edge.

How to drink it: Given its proof, don’t drink this straight up. Instead, try a variation on the classic Cuba libre cocktail, with lime and an amped-up mixer like Fentimans Curiosity Cola.

Ron Miel Honey Rum (Spain; Copa Spirits, Jacksonville, FL). Although the market has been inundated with honey-infused spirits of late, this honey rum from the Canary Islands stands out. It has a lovely sweet-spice scent akin to chai tea, and a sweet vanilla-bean, almost dulce de leche, flavor that spreads into a honeyed finish that coats the tongue.

How to drink it: Sweeten rum-based cocktails with this spirit in place of simple syrup, or sip it over ice.

STROH Jagertee (Austria; Niche Wine & Spirits, Cedar Knolls, NJ). While this is an old European digestif-type of product, it’s getting a fresh push in the U.S. The Austrian liqueur is made from overproof Inländer dark rum mixed with black tea, orange peel and spice, yielding an herbal profile that should be appreciated by lovers of Fernet or Averna. It warms all the way down to the toes.

How to drink it: Sip on it over ice after a massive meal, or mix it into a tea-based rum punch.

Whistling Andy Hibiscus-Coconut Rum (USA; Whistling Andy, Big Fork, MT). With its transparent pink-blush hue from hibiscus flowers, this unusual flavored white rum resembles rosé wine in the glass. But the delicate flavors tend toward sugary coconut, touched with vanilla and a hint of juicy red fruit. Made from sugar cane in a Montana microdistillery.

How to drink it: Showcase this rum’s fruity and floral notes in tropical and tiki-inspired cocktails.
