Beaujolais To Introduce Vineyard-Based Classification System

Within the next decade, Beaujolais has plans to introduce a vineyard-based classification system similar to Burgundy’s, although the Beaujolais model will use the premier cru designation to highlight the best sites. According to Anthony Collet, the marketing and communications director for the trade group Inter Beaujolais, roughly 40% of the region’s approximately 44,480 acres of vineyards have already undergone the assessment process since the project commenced four years ago.

At Acker Merrall & Condit’s Hong Kong wine auction that was held from Dec. 6–8, 2012, more than 1,270 lots were on offer and generated $7,932,932 in sales. The top lot was an eight-vintage (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006) vertical of assorted Domaine de la Romanée-Conti selections, which grossed $353,231. Other notable lots included a 10-magnum vertical of Screaming Eagle from vintages 1992–2002, which fetched $113,538; as well as a set of three magnums of Henri Jayer’s 1978 Cros Parantoux from Vosne-Romanée, which sold for $44,154.

Anchor Distilling Company in San Francisco has partnered with its sister company Anchor Brewing to release Hophead, a beer-inspired craft vodka. The vodka is distilled in a small copper pot still and is made with two kinds of hops sourced from Washington State’s Yakima Valley. Hophead has a suggested retail price of $30/750 ml and is currently available in San Francisco, New York City and other major markets.

For the first time in Oregon’s 50-year winemaking history, more than 2 million cases of the state’s wine were sold in a year, according to the 2011 Oregon Winery Census Report. Total case sales reached 2.2 million, surpassing the record of 1.93 million cases set in 2010, according to a report by Southern Oregon University’s Southern Oregon Research Center.

Rum brand Captain Morgan has become the sixth premium-spirits company to sell 10 million cases worldwide, reported Harpers. Captain Morgan’s key markets are the United States, Canada and Western Europe, which accounted for roughly 9 million of the 10 million cases sold.
