About the Bartender

Israeli-born bartender Elad Zvi, who runs The Broken Shaker with partner Gabriel Orta, is widely credited with helping raise the bar on cocktail culture

in Miami. Zvi and Orta also created Bar Lab, a consulting company that’s shaped drinks menus for some of the best bars and restaurants in town.

Zvi’s own menu at Broken is known for two things. The first is kind of a no-brainer. His drinks capitalize on Florida’s famous produce—especially citrus. But the second is a bit more curious: Every week he whips up a new improvised variation of the old-fashioned using candy. You read right: whiskey and candy. One of his biggest hits so far was a version with Reese’s Pieces.

“This is playful and reminds people of their childhood,” Zvi says. “We don’t like to take ourselves too seriously. Drinking should be fun.”
