Wine Enthusiast: Where did you grow up?
Carlo Mondavi: I was born in Napa, but grew up below my grandfather’s house, at our Wappo Hill ranch in the Stags Leap District.
WE: What are some of your favorite memories at Wappo Hill?
CM: When we first moved there, I’d go out in the fields and pick grapes in my pajamas. Later, I was always in the cellar with my dad, at Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One.
WE: What are your memories of your grandfather, Robert Mondavi?
CM: During the holidays, he wanted to be with the kids and have fun. I remember a time he asked me to go to the cellar and grab a bottle. I took a current vintage and he said, “Get a bottle with some age on it.” So I came back with a ’23 Margaux, and he said, “That’s more like it!” We became extremely close in the last 15 years of his life. He had a profound way of answering questions about life.
WE: What are you doing when you’re not working?
CM: I snowboarded professionally for four years. So I love that and surfing, skateboarding, rock climbing. In the winter I’m snowboarding as much as humanly possible.
WE: What do you do at Continuum?
CM: I’m in charge of sales and marketing west of the Mississippi.
WE: Do you have a favorite beer?
CM: I went through an IPA craze. But I’ve been drinking so much wine that now I’m enjoying lighter, crisper Pilsners from Lagunitas and -Bear Republic’s Racer 5.
WE: Favorite places to hang out in Napa Valley?
CM: Well, my wife, Megan, and I bought a -fixer-upper in Napa City, to be where the downtown energy is. So I love the Oxbow Public Market and Oenotri Restaurant.
