Whole Foods Market Launches Direct-to-Consumer Wine Club

Whole Foods Market announced the launch of Wine Club by Whole Foods Market, beginning October 1, 2014. The company has partnered with wine.com to offer Wine Club members four shipments of six bottles each a year, priced at $125 per shipment, including shipping costs. Doug Bell, Whole Foods’ global beverage buyer, and Devon Broglie MS, associate global beverage buyer and Wine Enthusiast 2014 Wine Star Award nominee, select the wines included in each shipment.

The American Vineyard Foundation (AVF) is awarding five grants to graduate students conducting viticulture and enology research at University of California Davis and Fresno State University. The various recipients, recognized for the value and diversity of their research in the industry, are studying water efficiency measures, breeding practices for drought- and salt-tolerant rootstock, and guidelines for commercial growers to improve quality and yields. The André Tchelistcheff and Dr. Richard Peterson Scholarship Programs, managed by the AVF since 2007, provide the funds for these grants.

Wine writer and industry veteran Steven Spurrier announced the release of Bride Valley, his first English sparkling wine through Liberty Wines. Sourced from Spurrier’s 25-acre South Dorset vineyards, the Pinot Meunier-driven wine will be distributed by Boisset-Vins in the United States, European Union and China.

New Orleans-based Sazerac Company and its subsidiary, Gemini Spirits & Wine, have added Bond & Royal Spirits Company to its company portfolio. The new Chicago-based division will be developing specialty and craft spirits brands, as well as building existing brands like Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal, Banks Rum and Siete Leguas Tequila.

After nine years as executive director of Sonoma County Vintners, Honore Comfort announced that she is leaving the advocacy and promotional trade group by January 31, 2015. Her announcement follows the departure of Director of Marketing Communication, Sara Cummings.
