Wine Enthusiast Contributing Editor Anne Krebiehl Recognized by the Institute of Masters of Wine

On November 5, 2014, The Institute of Masters of Wine welcomed its six new members, including Wine Enthusiast Contributing Editor Anne Krebiehl, at its Annual Award Ceremony and Reception, in London. The new MWs were honored for their performance on the Master of Wine Examination, with Krebiehl winning two awards: the Villa Maria Award, honoring Krebiehl’s knowledge and understanding of viticulture demonstrated in her exams, and the Noval Award, which recognizes the best dissertation by a new MW.

The American Wine Society—a non-profit consumer wine education group—awarded Gina Gallo of the E&J Gallo Winery the 2014 Award of Merit at the organization's national conference on November 1, 2014. The award honors Gallo for her significant and meritorious contributions to the wine industry.

Anheuser-Busch, the U.S. arm of AB InBev, confirmed on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 that it acquired Bend, Oregon-based 10 Barrel Brewing Co. The deal will includes the brewery’s brewpubs in Bend, Boise, Idaho and the third pub opening in Portland, Oregon, in 2015. 10 Barrel’s founding team will continue to lead the brewery’s operations. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of of the year.

On November 6, New York-based wine and spirits company Sovereign Brands reported that hip hop artist and mogul Jay-Z recently purchased Champagne brand Armand de Brignac for an undisclosed sum. According to Forbes, the purchase may simply be Jay-Z buying out the company of their investment, as the artist has had an unconfirmed financial stake in the brand since 2006. Jay-Z has been promoting the brand in his music since featuring it in a music video for his song, “Show Me What You Got.”

Free Flow Wines, provider of premium wine on tap, announced the winners of its inaugural Keggy Awards in Napa. The awards recognize wineries for their sustainability achievements in wine on tap, saving the companies from producing more than 1 million bottles. The winners include Au Bon Climat, Qupé, Constellation Brands, Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Hahn Family Wines, King Estate Winery, and The Wine Group.
