Actress Drew Barrymore released a new Pinot Grigio under her Barrymore Wines label in partnership with Carmel Road Winery. Barrymore Wines was founded in 2010 and released its first vintage, Barrymore 2011 Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, the following year. The winery plans to expand to include more varieties in 2015.

On November 14, 2014, the T.J. Martell Foundation announced it will honor rock group RUSH and Doug Shafer, CEO of Shafer Vineyards at the 11th Annual World Tour of Wine held on November 20 in New York City. The music industry’s largest foundation gathers each year to toast achievements in cutting-edge research in leukemia, cancer and AIDS treatment. The World Tour of Wine tasting event includes a five-course gourmet meal and rare tastings curated by wine representatives at each table.

Australian film director Baz Luhrmann designed a $785 champagne saber in partnership in with the department store Barneys New York. Luhrmann created four signature cocktails to commemorate the sabre’s release, created specifically for the department store’s Christmas gift collection. One quarter of sales proceeds will go to the charity Room to Read, a foundation supporting literacy and gender equality in developing nations. Luhrmann also recently collaborated with another beverage company, Absolut Vodka, to create limited edition Absolute Oz.

As we eagerly await a new round of competitions for the 2015 Best Young SOMM in the United States beginning December 6, 2014, we’d like to remember American Sommelier Jane Lopes’s recent achievement in winning the second place silver medal at the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’s 2014 International Best Young Sommelier Competition held in Copenhagen this past September. The The Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is the world’s oldest, largest and most prestigious food and wine society. Lopes is the first woman from the United States to rank among the Best Young Sommeliers in the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs competition.

With great sadness it was announced that Mike Roberts, founder of Ridgeview English sparkling wine estate, passed away Friday, November 14, 2014. Roberts, together with his wife Chris, founded Ridgeview in 1994, producing their first commercial vintage in 1996. There’s been an outpouring of condolences from the international wine community via personal statements and Twitter. Ridgeview is known for their brut NV, blancs de noirs, and rosé bottlings as well as a proprietary blends form English stores Laithwaites and Marks & Spencer.
