Crisp, clean and with mouth-watering acidity for days, this centuries-old thirst-quencher has not only survived so-called modern mixology, it helped inspire it. Warning: After sipping this amazingly simple summertime drink, you’ll never look at a fancy cocktail menu the same way again.
2½ ounces London dry or Old Tom gin
1 ounce lemon juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
3 ounces club soda
1 seedless cherry (for garnish)
1 slice orange (for garnish)
In a shaker filled with ice, combine the gin, lemon juice and sugar. Shake well. Strain into a Collins glass filled three-quarters with ice. Top with club soda and stir several times. Garnish with the cherry and orange slice.
