7 Spirits to Pour for Pride Month

To celebrate Pride Month, here’s a shortlist of spirits bottles that honor and support the extended lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, and benefit related organizations.

Some of these are first-time, limited-edition labels, while other producers have offered Pride bottles for years.

Privateer Rum, based in Ipswich, Massachusetts, announced the debut of its sixth-annual Pride Label, which benefits local organizations year-round.

“It’s important to us that it is not just ‘put a rainbow on it,’ but that it is genuine and contributes to the community,” says Privateer President and Head Distiller Maggie Campbell.

This special-edition bottle isn’t designed to benefit one specific charity. Instead, it’s part of the craft distillery’s ongoing efforts to support the L.G.B.T. community, which includes a pair-up with the Pride Center of the Capital Region to raise money and awareness year round.

The Washington, DC-area distillery is working with event partners and donating 10% of the sales of this banana-flavored, single-barrel rum to Whitman-Walker Health, a clinic that has long served the gay and transgender community. It’s an interesting rum, too—molasses fermented with a hefeweizen yeast is aged for six months in a used Bourbon barrel. Dehydrated bananas are infused into the rum during that time, as well.

The rainbow flag replaces the red logo on special bottles. Although the Pride-labeled bottles are available year round, the distillery partners each June with a local group. This year, sales will benefit Boston GLASS (Gay & Lesbian Adolescent Social Services), which provides services to the area’s L.G.B.T. youth of color and their allies.

In 2018, the brand expanded to feature 34 couples of a variety of sexual orientations from across the U.S. Similar to 2017, Smirnoff will donate $1 per bottle to the Human Rights Campaign. With this year’s expected donation, Smirnoff will have contributed more than $430,000 to HRC.

The bottle commemorates the 40th anniversary of Milk’s victory to become the first openly gay elected official in California. Each bottle is individually numbered, and its label was inspired by a mural by Paraguayan artist Oz Montania that features the famed Milk quote, “Hope will never be silent.” Sales will raise funds for the Harvey Milk Foundation.
