Our 10 Most Searched Wines of the Year, Ranked by Traffic

There’s something a little voyeuristic about analyzing the browsing histories of strangers. And yet, that’s precisely how we created this list of our most-searched wine reviews.

After sorting through more than 1.6 million searches, we compiled the most sought-after bottles on Winemag.com. And to prioritize wines still available to purchase, we kept it only to reviews published in the past year.

The results were decidedly democratic. Just two bottles cost more than $25, and the most-searched wine of the year is $17. Domestic bottles reign supreme, with California Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir dominating the list.

The Wines We Scored 100 Points in 2019

1. Beringer 2017 Founder’s Estate Pinot Noir (California); $10, 91 points. This medium- to full-bodied wine is one of the best values in Pinot today. It shows classic black and red-cherry aromas, a broad palate of dark fruits and light oak spices. Lifted acidity and moderate tannins complete the nicely composed picture. Best Buy. —Jim Gordon

2. Meiomi 2017 Pinot Noir (Monterey County-Sonoma County-Santa Barbara County); $25, 87 points. Obvious oak spices including cedar, clove, cinnamon and wood char fill the aroma of this medium-bodied, extroverted wine and continue in the flavors, giving a sweet edge to the fruit component. —J.G.

3. Educated Guess 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (North Coast); $20, 90 points. This wine shows good concentration in color, flavor and texture. It is deep and dark, with ripe, jammy tones of blackberry and black cherry. Significant baking-spice elements add complexity, while fine-grained tannins add a thick texture. —J.G.

4. Williams Selyem 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County); $39, 98 points. This is a perfumed and seductive wine made from a range of sites across the county. Fresh acidity is seamlessly integrated between textured layers of black cherry, forest floor and cardamom. The overall experience is balanced and undeniably beautiful. —Virginie Boone

5. Carnivor 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (California); $15, 86 points. This full-bodied wine is theatrically dark and rich, showing a color deeper than wines three times as expensive. It also has late-harvest plum, raisin and chocolate flavors, and a soft, thick texture. —J.G.

6. Austin Hope 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles); $50, 96 points. This bottling is dark in the glass and extremely lavish, with silky aromas of cassis, black cherry and caramel. The palate combines blackberry mousse, mocha and more caramel with a firm tannic structure and buoyant acidity. —Matt Kettmann

7. Mark West 2017 Pinot Noir (California); $11, 87 points. This affordable wine is a little obvious in terms of oaky spices in the aroma and flavors, but it backs them up with good cherry and berry flavors to complete the package. It’s medium bodied and smooth in texture. Best Buy. —J.G.

8. Dark Horse NV Brut Bubbles Sparkling (California); $6, 90 points. This can of bubbles offer a lot of Chardonnay character in the apple and pear aromas and a lightly toasty vanilla accent. The flavors are layered, but light and the acidity is fresh. Best Buy. —J.G.

9. Francis Coppola 2016 Diamond Collection Black Label Claret Cabernet Sauvignon (California); $21, 91 points. Superripe flavors of black cherry juice and blackberry jam give this full-bodied wine richness and depth. It is concentrated and deep, showing dark chocolate and blueberry flavors, with light spicy, oaky accents of vanilla, cedar and mocha. Editors’ Choice. —J.G.

10. Josh Cellars 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (California); $17, 90 points. This full-bodied wine is packed with aromas of ripe fruit, cedar, cinnamon and flowers on the nose. The juicy palate brings flavors of blackberry and black cherry wrapped in a velvety layer of fine-grained tannins. Editors’ Choice. —J.G.
