Prior to her appointment with Wine Enthusiast, O’Keefe, who moved to Italy in 1991, wrote regularly on Italian wine for Decanter, as well as for World of Fine Wine and on winesearcher.com. She is a former contributing editor for Wine News magazine, and is the author of Franco Biondi Santi: The Gentleman of Brunello (Veronelli Editore, 2005), a recipient of a Gourmand Wine Book Award. Her latest two books are Brunello di Montalcino: Understanding and Appreciating One of Italy’s Greatest Wines (University of California Press, 2012) and Barolo and Barbaresco: the King and Queen of Italian Wine (University of California Press, 2014).

Antonio Rallo
Sicilia DOC Winemaker & President, Consorzio Sicilia DOC

Antonio Rallo was born in 1967 representing the fifth generation of a Sicilian family with 160 years of experience in quality wine.

He graduated in Agricultural Sciences with highest honors from the University of Palermo. Before devoting himself completely to the family business, he moved abroad to deepen his knowledge in a traditionally strategic market for Italian wine.

Winemaker of great passion and technical competence, he oversees the production of his winery which has historic cellars and estates with over 400 hectares of vineyards.

Grown up among vineyards and cellars he nurtures a great love for the territory and promotes as President of the Sicilia DOC Consortium the growth of the system with a strategic vision of Sicilian wine involving the island’s winemakers.

 

Alberto Tasca d’Almerita
Sicilia DOC Winemaker & President, SOStain Sicily

Born in 1971, is a dynamic Sicilian winemaker and a man of diversity, with a great value for biodiversity in the ecosystems of Sicilian vineyards. With his great love for Sicily and roots dug deeply into the territory, Alberto shares his respect of the territory, the people, the culture and the environment no matter where he finds himself.

In 2010, Alberto embraced a new project, “SOStain – Sustainability in Sicilian viticulture”, a protocol recognized by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, that has become the compass in Sicily for all winemakers seeking to measure and reduce their impact on the ecosystem. In 2020 he became President of the Foundation SOStain Sicily, which has the task of promoting sustainable viticulture in Sicily, to facilitate the sharing of best-practices aimed at respecting the ecosystem.

He is in the board of Sicilia DOC Consortium and Assovini Sicilia and he is also Vice President for the Istituto del Vino Italiano di Qualità, Grandi Marchi, where he promotes the culture and quality of Italian wines.

 

Alessio Planeta
Sicilia DOC Winemaker & Board Member, Consorzio Sicilia DOC

After completing his Masters in agriculture Alessio spent the best years of his youth studying the history of Sicily and its viticulture. He became a sort of wine-nerd, in fact he spent his so-called holidays working in France, Piemonte, California, and Australia, instead of in Ibiza or Saint-Tropez. Along with his large family, he decided to get into the ring. It definitely went well, showing that Sicily was not secondary to anyone.

Nowadays Francesca, Santi and Alessio are protecting and leading a collection of six boutique wineries, to save and show the heritage and the infinite biodiversity of their vineyards and beyond. The main focus is on researching and developing the local and historical varieties, in parallel with the development of tourism, with the help of culture, cuisine and art, and the participation by the foundation in the first regional program to develop the sustainability in agriculture.
