This Portuguese grape is dark-skinned and full-bodied. Though rare in the U.S., it is part of Abacela's ongoing exploration of Iberian varieties. The strong tannins bring black tea astringency and flavors of dried leaves around brambly blackberry fruit. It's a savory wine but layered and ageworthy. A great bottle to toss in and mystify your friends during any blind tasting of tannic reds. Paul Gregutt
