Alain Jaume et Fils 2011 Domaine Grand Veneur Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

An excellent wine, this is disappointing in the context of the super 2009 and 2010 versions. This year, the oak sticks out like an ill-fitting overcoat, an unwieldy veneer of toast and vanilla atop chocolaty fruit. It's full-bodied and promisingly supple, with a long finish, so give it 3–4 years of time to come around. Joe Czerwinski
