Altos de Medrano 2001 Reserva Viña Hormigas Malbec (Mendoza)

Altos is a six-man, predominantly Italian joint venture that makes great Malbec. Their reserva is richly extracted, with legs that want to climb up rather than down. The nose is full of mint, leather and blueberry, while the thick palate stays balanced and tight. The fact that oak is complementary and not dominant is the coup de grace. Michael Schachner
