Arnaldo Caprai 2016 25 Anni (Montefalco Sagrantino)

This has a shy nose that eventually releases aromas of toasted oak, scorched forest floor, leather and camphor. The bracing, concentrated palate offers steeped prune, licorice, bitter nut and candied notes, but it's dominated by scorching alcohol and a backbone of grippy, close-grained tannins. Give the aggressive tannins a few more years to unclench, then drink sooner rather than later before the remaining fruit dries out. Fans of sheer muscle will be into this, while fans of finesse and balance not so much. Kerin O’Keefe
