Ata Rangi 2016 McCrone Vineyard Pinot Noir (Martinborough)

The McCrone block of vineyards is threaded with clay and is slightly cooler than Ata Rangi's other sites. The result is a Pinot that walks a tightrope of power and elegance. This vintage is tightly wound at first, but with time in the glass it starts to unzip itself in waves of sage, anise, clove and violet followed by brambly blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, dark chocolate and a savory, meaty nuance. The palate is tightly wound, even a little austere, but is silky and refined while still retaining its personality. This should cellar beautifully until at least until 2040. Christina Pickard
