A ripe nose is slathered in resiny oak smells, mostly of raisin and aged balsamic vinegar. A huge palate, with pounding tannins, is anything but smooth, while this monster red from a hot vintage tastes of mocha, tobacco, cassis and blackberry. Coffee and smoky notes dominate a long finish; drink through 2027. Michael Schachner
