Bella Ridge 2012 Shiraz (Western Australia)

This small-batch winery, located in the Swan Valley just outside Perth, includes a dash of Viognier in its nearly decade-old Shiraz. Still a vivid cherry color, the wine shows a lot of volatile acidity. The subsequent nail-polish-remover smell is hard to get past since it muffles the high-toned red-berry, floral, spice and sap notes, making the acidity feel shrill. Nevertheless the juicy fruit and frame of toasty oak are still present, and natural-leaning wine drinkers may be able to get past all the VA. Christina Pickard
