Benom 2018 Hoc Red (Paso Robles)

It must be challenging to make nontraditional red blends that stand out in a lineup, but the French-born Fabre brothers are doing just that. This blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Syrah and 17% Carignan starts with aromas of oregano, marjoram, baked earth and black plums. The palate picks up the herbal tones, then delivers dark-chocolate, smoked beef and black-currant flavors. Matt Kettmann
