Birichino NV Besson Old Vines Homage a Georges Besson Grenache (Central Coast)

Editors' Choice

This is a very unique style of wine that's hard to classify. With a certain percentage of grapes treated in the appassimento style, there's a dessert element to the bottling, with potent aromas of raspberry jam, rosewater and cola on the nose. But the palate zips with acidity and dry, firm tannins, offering sharp thyme and other herbal elements. I'm not sure what to call it, except worthy of attention. Matt Kettmann
