Byron 2001 Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley)

This is a rich Chardonnay brimming with fruity flavors, and it is also very lavishly oaked. The fruit is tropical, including pineapple and mango, and the elaborate oak contributes buttered toast, smoke and vanilla. Acidity provides a bracing backbone; one minor quibble is that all the makeup is on the surface.
