Caliza 2018 Reserve Syrah (Paso Robles Willow Creek District)

For a wine that spent 18 months in new French oak, the nose is mellow at first on this bottling, showing loam and light wood, before richer tones of plum jam, mace, lavender and raw meat come through. The palate lands with a viscosity that's impressively comforting, carrying cassis, toasty oak and light caramel flavors across a firm structure. Matt Kettmann
