Callaway 1999 Coastal Reserve Merlot (California)

Merlot is the toughest red wine to make interesting in California, not that that stops people from trying. This version highlights the difficulties. It's just too herbaceous and even vegetal, despite some blackberry flavors. The extremely dry tannins and acidity add to the palate impression of earthy austerity.
