Winemaker Ryan Carr wrangles with this vineyard each year, as it sits in red clay atop a coastal bluff right over the seaside town of Carpinteria. This vintage is a hit, starting with compact aromas of red currant, berry, crushed slate and red licorice. There's an herbal array to the sip, from marjoram and anise to thyme and lavender, yet it's the brisk red-pomegranate fruit that keeps it singing into the finish. Matt Kettmann
