Cerro Prieto 2009 Reserve Merlot (Paso Robles)

Larry and Teresa Stanton take meticulous care of their southern Paso fruit, which results in this wine that's brimming with aromas of cedar, blackberry, anise and mint. The flavors walk a line between red and purple fruit and cigar box woodiness, with crushed black rock, mocha and espresso accents. It's quite elegant and still lively. Matt Kettmann
