Château Julien 1999 Estate Merlot (Monterey County)

Starts off with oaky aromas floating over cassis and blackberry, and turns exceptionally tannic in the mouth. Numbing, stunning, it's a palate shocker, and doesn't have the fruit to balance the tannins out. Superrich foods, like a leg of lamb, will fare best.
