Cirillo 2012 1850 Grenache (Barossa Valley)

The back label of Cirillo's top red makes no qualms about the prominence of French and American oak in this wine, listing no other flavor nuances. Nonetheless, there is plenty of lifted ripe red berry fruit on the nose. And there's also a lot of oak-derived characters in the form of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and white pepper. On the medium-weighted palate, the fruit gets a little flat and flabby, wanting for more freshness and feeling somewhat bogged down by the oak. It begs the question of how much longer this will hold up in bottle. Christina Pickard
