Clos La Chance 2000 Syrah (Paso Robles)

Editors' Choice

This Santa Cruz winery turns southward in search of ripe Syrah. The grapes certainly achieved high sugars, which winemaker Jeff Ritchey vinified to 14.5%, basically bone dry, leaving behind all sorts of fruity, berry flavors. It's a sumptuous wine, built along Cabernet's lines, yet softer and richer, with a sappiness that cries out to be matched food.
